Suffering from Dry Skin on Feet?

‘Xerosis’ or ‘dry skin’ occurs in approx. 29% of working age adults and 90% of people aged over 80?

There are numerous causes of dry skin including soap, hot showers, age, menopause, eczema or medication (i.e. Statins)

But emollients/moisturisers can help!

If you have cracked dry skin on your feet apply your moisturiser when the skin is damp (it will sting less)

Emollients are most effective when applied after bathing, when the skin is damp, warm and clean

If you suffer from sensitive dry skin, avoid rubbing moisturiser into the skin but instead ‘spread like butter on toast’

Emollients enhance the effectiveness of topical steroid creams thus reducing the length of time using the steroid

You should aim to apply 4g of emollient per day to mildly dry feet and up to 8g for very dry skin (1g = 1 x single pump)

DO avoid aqueous cream which contains Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) which removes natural lipids, reduce the normal skin barrier and cause skin sensitivities.

Remember the skin is the largest organ of the body and the main barrier protecting you from external threats such as bacteria, virus and fungi, look after it.
